This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students, dental students, and graduate students. The department also provides guidance and research experience to graduate students seeking advanced degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty (16)-directed research programs of which many are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession by activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities. Job Duties This research technician will be responsible for conducting various laboratory experiments with an emphasis on bacterial molecular biology and tick-mouse experiments. The researcher's primary responsibility will be to carry out the goals of research projects within the laboratory. These goals will necessitate that the selected candidate perform various molecular biology assays, such as cloning, restriction mapping, PCR, qRT-PCR, preparation/purification of RNA, DNA and proteins, and western blotting. The researcher will also perform tick-mouse infection assays. The selected candidate will also collect and record data as specified in research protocols to assess accuracy, validity, and integrity of data. The researcher will also assist other laboratory personnel and graduate students as needed and contribute to the organization of the laboratory by helping keep accurate inventory, assisting with maintenance of lab equipment, maintaining biohazard standards, and restocking laboratory supplies. The candidate will identify, track and report variations or discrepancies in inventory used in laboratory. The candidate will apply and maintain sanitation and safety procedures and ensure compliance with these procedures by others. Minimum Education/Experience Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. License or Certification required by statute or regulation None Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Bachelor of Science and one year of directly related experience or Master of Science. Molecular biology experience, cell culture experience, and protein purification experience is preferred. The selected candidate will be expected to have the technical knowledge to perform the duties, the ability to follow instructions through a standard work process, the ability to perform routine and repetitious tasks, and the ability to observe, monitor, collect, and record data. Candidates should possess the following skills: Technical and practical experience to independently carry out the experiments needed to obtain the goals of this laboratory. Practical experience can only be obtained working in a laboratory and doing these types of experiments. Good interpersonal skills, which are required for interactions with students and other laboratory and office personnel. Good manual dexterity to perform work with a great deal of accuracy. This skill is necessary to perform experiments reproducibly. Knowledge and ability to independently operate instrumentation, equipment and/or software used for research objectives. Sufficient writing and mathematical skills. Good organization skills. These skills are preferred for tasks such as maintaining laboratory supplies, performing multiple tasks within the time provided, and keeping accurate records.
