DIRECTOR OF NURSING (DON)PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB POSITION:The primary purpose of your job position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations within the individual's scope of practice, as applicable, and as may be directed by the Administrator, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Listed below is an outline of the duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. As the DIRECTOR OF NURSING, you are delegated the authority, responsibility, & accountability to carry out your assigned duties.Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. HOWEVER, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities.* Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing service department, its programs, and its activitiesMeet with administration, medical, and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning department inservices, programs, and activitiesDevelop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residentsDevelop and maintain nursing objectives and standardsReview department policies and procedures so you can interpret to personnel, residents, visitors, family members, etc. as necessaryAssist in the development of the department budgetBe aware of and help develop programs designed for inservice education, on-the-job training, and orientation classes. Monitor records for attendance, etcMaintain an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other health-related facilities and organizationsMeet with department personnel on a regularly scheduled basis, and solicit advice from inter- department supervisors concerning the operation of the department, assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of servicesParticipate in discharge planning, development, and implementation of resident care plans, resident assessments, etcPerform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc. and submitting to the Administrator as requiredInvolve the resident/family in planning objectives and goals for the residentProvide information to resident/families as to Medicare/Medicaid or other financial assistance programs available to the resident, or refer to appropriate social service department or agencyAssist in determining departmental staffing, evaluate employee performance, and make recommendations to the Administrator concerning wage and salary adjustments. Informs and consults Administrator of hiring, terminations, transfers, etc. of departmental staff as necessaryParticipate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessaryMaintain CONFIDENTIALITY pertinent resident care information to assure resident rights are protectedCoordinate Nursing Service with other departmentsAssure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc. are maintained at adequate levels by setting up systems and monitoringInspect the nursing service areas & practices for compliance with current applicable regulationsDevelop a nursing service organization structure (who reports to whom)Serve on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed by the AdministratorEvaluate and implement recommendations from the facility's committees, e.g. Pharmacy, Infection Control, etcParticipate in resident selection in relation to nursing needs & the capability of the department to supply the needed careWork with the facility's consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as requiredReview complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the AdministratorKeep abreast of economic conditions/situation and recommend adjustments to assure the continued ability to provide quality resident careRepresent the facility at and participate in meetingsRepresent the facility in dealing with outside agencies, including governmental agencies and third party payees, or provide an authorized representative when unable to attend such meetingsDelegate authority, responsibility, & accountability to other responsible department personnelAttend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field, as well as to maintain a professional statusRecommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the departmentMake written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator concerning the operation of the nursing service departmentAssure that the department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for resident comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/servicesMaintain an adequate liaison with families and residentsExecute resident care policies in the absence of the medical director and/or the attending physicianAssure that the total nursing needs of residents are met by assuring that sufficient number of professional and nonprofessional nursing personnel are on duty at all timesAssist in scheduling department working hours, personnel, work assignments, etc. to maintain quality resident careAssist in establishing the administration, procedures, and control of medication, etc. as recommended by the pharmacist and pharmacy committeeAssume the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the nursing service departmentAssure that all nurses' notes are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and of the resident's response to the care by having systems in place to monitorReview the nursing requirements of each resident admitted to the facility, as may be required, and assist the attending physician in planning for the resident's careEstablish a procedure for assuring that nursing personnel, to include private duty nurses, have a valid and current license as required by this stateMake rounds with attending physician/medical director, etc. as necessaryMake daily rounds to assure that department personnel are performing required duties and to assure that appropriate resident care is being renderedOther duties as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed by the AdministratorWORKING CONDITIONS:* Works in well-lighted/ventilated office areas, as well as throughout the nursing service areasSitting, standing, bending, lifting, and moving intermittently during working hoursInvolved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions/circumstancesSubject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etcCommunicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisorsWillingness to work beyond normal working hours when necessaryInvolved in community/civic health matters/projectsAttend and participate in continuing educational programsSubject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, odors, etc. throughout the work dayThis facility will make reasonable accommodations that will permit an employee to perform the essential functions of his or her position
