Job Description:

SummaryThis individual is an extension of the ERSC staff in providing indirect care for patients and their families during his/her assigned shift. The receptionist also greets patients and families and initiates the paper flow to record all procedures. The receptionist sets the tone and pace for the department and its daily operation. Communicates with the nursing staff, visitors/families regarding patient information and carrying out assigned receptionist and secretarial duties.Essential Responsibilities: The essential responsibilities of the Surgery Center Secretary/Receptionist include but are not limited to the following: Displays effective written and oral communication skills. Promote effective communication between patients, families, staff, visitors and physician's office staff, etc.Completes selected pre-operative patient information. Schedules pre-op interviews, ensures/verifies required demographic, clinical and insurance information is obtained and accurately entered into the computer. Ensures accurate order entry and documentation, etc.Ensures adequate office supple are available, returns unused/returnable supplies, files/sorts mail received, etc.Provides prompt, courteous service to all patients arriving for registration and maintain compliance with hospital and departmental procedural standards, directs patients/families to appropriate areas. Coordinates appointment times to avoid conflicts.Schedules all pre-op interviews on surgical, cardiac cath and arteriogram patients. Assembles paper work and schedules ESWL, etc.Uses at least two appropriate patient identifiers, places identification bracelet on patient and removes when labs are completed, making sure all correct labs were drawn, CXR or EKG done and red arm bracelet put on by lab if required and within time frame for Type & Screen or Type & Crossmatch, etc.Orders lab work for same-day patients upon arrival, etc.Collects pertinent information for cancelled/rescheduled surgeries and enters data into chart and/or computer and communicate with appropriate personnel, etc.Recognizes, communicates and responds quickly to patient's significant needs. Keeps nurses informed of patients special needs, e.g. wheelchair, walker, hard of hearing, etcMinimum Qualifications:Completion of high school required. Two years if college with an AA degree in Medical Secretarial Science or related field preferred.Work Experience:At least one year medical office/medical field experienceAptitudes:Ability to operate, accurately and efficiently, general office machines, i.e., computer, typewriter, calculator, FaxAbility to use administrative date, medical records, order entry ISAbility to maintain effective working relationships and communication levels with employees, supervisors, physicians, physician's office personnel, ancillary departments, Administration and the general public.Knowledge of basic medical terminology, insurance and employers, surgical procedures and scheduling policies.Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous communications, i.e., telephones, intercom systems and conversationsDemonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended services to all patients, visitors and families. Exhibits knowledge and a basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric and geriatric patients and family/visitors.
