Job Description:

Staff Physician's role and responsibilities pertain to duties at the Greenville HCC within the Medical Service and Gastroenterology Section of the Durham VAMC. Gastroenterology Section responsibilities are outpatient gastroenterology. Clinical competency in esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy is required. The position requires no on call. Staff Physician will provide outpatient Gastroenterology consultation, seeing new consults and following patients. In clinic, Staff Physician may be asked to supervise medical students, residents and gastroenterology fellows. Individual will be expected to provide teaching to a wide range of learners, including medical students, house staff, gastroenterology fellows, mid-level providers and staff. The Staff Physician is expected to provide clinical updates and sessions for the Section, participate in local and national gastroenterology activities, and maintain all necessary training and CME. The Staff Physician is expected to have academic credentials commensurate for faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at the East Carolina University School of Medicine. As a Staff Physician at the Greenville Health Care Center, your duties will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Provide clinical care as assigned by the Section and Service Chiefs
  • Provide clinical care for Veterans who have gastrointestinal such as diseases of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine and colon
  • Attend in the outpatient Gastroenterology Consult Services for clinical care of veterans
  • Instruction and supervision of medical students, house staff, Gastroenterology fellows, and mid-level providers
  • Perform endoscopic procedures for patients including EGD and colonoscopy
  • Perform paracentesis
  • Maintain clinical records as part of routine medical care
  • Additional administrative responsibilities as determined by the Section and Service Chiefs Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL STAY OPEN UNTIL FILLEDBasic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience:
      • Board certified in Gastroenterology.
      • Successful completion of an accredited fellowship in Gastroenterology. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs): Straight pulling and pushing; pulling hand over hand; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional and mental stability.You must provide a complete Application Package which includes:
