Description of Work

Salary Grade: GN05 / Salary Range: $31,200.00 - $44,091.00. Internal Posting - Only current permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply. This posting is for a Transportation Worker II. Work involves the safe and efficient operation of farm-type tractors with attachments, specialized landscape equipment such as hydro-seeder, computer controlled pesticide sprayer and mulch blower. Employee will be required to inspect NCDOT contractors performing landscape related activities such as shoulder mowing, litter removal, guardrail trimming and herbicide application. Participate in seeding and erosion control operations, plant bed maintenance and application of pesticides. This position will be subject to emergency callback during adverse weather or extreme circumstances. Other duties as assigned. This position will be based at the Greenville Roadside Environmental Office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices.
  • Experience in operation of pesticide applicator, truck, tractors, and utility vehicles.
  • Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations.
  • Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hydroseeder, skid steer)
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.

Additional Expectations:

Ability to inspect NCDOT contractors in their daily activities (shoulder mowing, litter removal, guardrail trimming, herbicide application, etc.) and keep accurate, detailed records of activities. Ability to communicate well with others via verbal, written and electronic means. Ability to operate assigned equipment effectively and safely. Ability to follow, understand and carry out instructions. Keep accurate records of work accomplished. Safely operate state vehicle. Ability to lift and carry 80 lbs. Safety toe footwear is required. Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Applicant will be given 60 days to obtain a Class A CDL Permit and 90 days from date of hire to receive a Class A CDL Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Requirements Possession of a current Commercial Driver s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.
